📋 How it works▾

Lo-Chlor Calcium Down Hardness Reducer is a liquid calcium hardness reducer that lowers elevated calcium levels in pool and spa water — restoring them to the ideal range of 200–400 ppm and preventing calcium scale formation on surfaces and equipment.

High calcium hardness is a common problem in Australia, particularly in areas with hard mains water or where calcium-based pool chemicals have been used over time. Excessively hard water causes calcium carbonate to precipitate out and deposit as white scale on tiles, fittings, salt chlorinator cells and waterline surfaces.

What's the ideal calcium hardness level?▾
The recommended range is 200–400 ppm for pools. For fibreglass pools, aim for the lower end (200–300 ppm). Below 200 ppm, water becomes aggressive and can corrode surfaces. Above 400 ppm, scale formation risk increases significantly.
Can I just dilute the pool instead?▾
Partial drain and refill is the most effective way to lower calcium hardness significantly, especially if levels are above 700 ppm. Calcium Down is most effective for moderate reduction (bringing levels from 400–600 ppm back into range) or as a preventative treatment.
Will it affect my pH or chlorine?▾
Calcium Down uses a HEDP (hydroxyethylidene diphosphonic acid) complex which can slightly lower pH. Monitor pH after treatment and adjust if needed. It does not directly affect chlorine levels.
How did my calcium get so high?▾
Calcium enters pools from hard mains water, calcium-based sanitisers (calcium hypochlorite), and calcium-based pH adjusters. Over time, evaporation concentrates all dissolved minerals including calcium, which is why hardness levels tend to creep up over summer.
